Lumen: Wilmette Christened the "Eastland" (200031) when she was built by Jenks Ship Building Company of Port Huron, Michigan in 1903, the ship was a passenger excursion steamer on Lakes Michigan and Erie. On July 24, 1915 the "Eastland" overturned on the Chicago River; 835 people died in the accident. The hull was salvaged and taken over by the U.S. Navy and rebuilt as a training ship named the USS "Wilmette". Owned by the U.S. Treasury Department, the ship was used as a revenue cutter on the Great Lakes and along the east coast until 1937. When she was sold in 1937 to the Texas Refrigerator Steamship Lines, she received the registry number 235600. On the Great Lakes less than two years, she was stationed at Milwaukee 1897-1898. The remaining years of government service were along the Atlantic Coast. The ship was idle from 1934-1946. Sold in 1946, the "Gresham" was renamed the "T. V. McAllister"; sold again in 1947 and renamed the "Trade Winds". Her fourth owner named the ship the "Hatvikva" in 1949.
